How Will You Prepare for This Hurricane Season?

Every year various states offer sales tax holidays and/or tax-free weekends to help reduce the cost burden for its residents. This summer, Florida will offer two such sales tax holidays. Coming up soon is the Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday to help prepare for the 2019 hurricane season. Scheduled for later in August is the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday.

The 2019 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday was passed by the Florida Legislature and signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis. This sales tax holiday begins Friday, May 31, 2019 and extends through Thursday, June 6, 2019.

During this sales tax holiday period, qualifying items related to disaster preparedness are exempt from sales tax. However, the sales tax holiday does not apply to the rental or repair of any of the qualifying items. Additionally, the holiday does not apply to sales in a theme park, entertainment complex, public lodging establishment, or airport.

For more information and a list of qualifying items, please see the Department of Revenue’s Taxpayer Information Publication. For your convenience, the Department has provided digital downloads and social media posts for individuals and businesses interested in sharing information about the holiday.
