April 16th is National Healthcare Decisions Day. Consider discussing these items with your family members to confirm their wishes and advance directives.
There are two types of advance directives:
- A Living Will, which should contain specific instructions about your wishes about withholding or withdrawing life-prolonging procedures. This is extremely important to have in place in the event of a terminal condition, an end-stage condition, or are in a persistent vegetative state.
- A Designation of Heath Care Surrogate, which is a document that appoints a decision maker in the event that you are unable to make health care decisions for yourself. Be sure to inform your surrogate of your medical treatment wishes and desires so that he or she can make the best decisions on your behalf.
These two documents should be stored in an easily accessible location. Remember to inform all family members where he or she can find these documents in case of an emergency.
We can help you get started and get organized with these and other documents. We have a team of professionals who specialize in elder care services and relationships with other professionals, such as attorneys.
